What is a Mole Fraction?
The mole fraction is a measure of the number of moles of a particular substance in a mixture, divided by the total number of moles in the mixture. In other words, it is a way of expressing the concentration of a substance in a mixture.
For example, suppose we have a sample of air that contains 0.04 moles of oxygen and 0.96 moles of nitrogen. The mole fraction of oxygen in this sample would be 0.04/0.96 = 0.042. Similarly, the mole fraction of nitrogen would be 0.96/0.96 = 1.
The mole fraction is often denoted by the symbol X, so in our example, the mole fraction of oxygen would be written as X(O2) = 0.042 and the mole fraction of nitrogen would be written as X(N2) = 1.
Mole fractions can be used to calculate the average molecular weight of a mixture (sometimes called the mean molecular weight). This is done by multiplying each component's molecular weight by its mole fraction, and then summing over all components:
